Scary stuff

Starting a new business is scary stuff.

We begged our way into a tiny teeny line of credit and off we went. Travel to France. Buy merchandise. Figure out how in the heck to get it back to Alabama. Buy a shipping container. Modify said shipping
container. And then we waited.

And we waited.

And we waited, for what felt like an eternity. We emailed and called and nagged the poor shippers.

Feeling fairly, note the word fairly, confident, we took the plunge and picked a date for our inaugural Pop-Up. With several weeks to go, surely everything would arrive and the container would be ready.

Right?

Less than a week to go before we were to present our treasures to the droves of shoppers we just KNEW
would be coming, still no merchandise…

Oh, and rain in the forecast.

Should we postpone?

Do we need a rain contingency?

And, by the way, did we buy enough stuff? And how in the heck are we going to display it all?

Is anyone going to show up? If they show up, will they like the things we picked?

It was a roulette wheel of concerns.

With days (that felt more like hours) to spare, we got the call and our pallets were delivered! Crouching
in our low ceiling basement, we tore into our goodies and, with every box, the memory of each purchase
came rushing back.

Family and friends (you know who you are) showed up and, by the hair of our chinny chin chins, we
pulled it all together with just enough time for a quick celebratory glass of wine.

Similar to childbirth, all the worry and pain was forgotten and suddenly, just like that, we had a little
French boutique for the weekend!

Pottery from Vallauris...

We must have passed by the nondescript building tucked away at the end of a long driveway at least half a dozen times. Even as we knocked and pushed the door open we still weren’t certain we were in the right place. Our quest was  to find the best pottery in a town renowned for pottery and so far all we had done was get lost several times in as many hours.

Once inside, though, Fabienne appeared and we knew we were in the right spot indeed. She was charming and kind and sat with us for at least an hour as we put together our first order of beautifully colored plates, mugs, pitchers, and bowls.

We have been ordering from her ever since.

Savon de Marseille

There's something to be said for tradition.

Our soaps are manufactured in the traditional, time-tested, “Marseille” method in a small atelier nestled between the Alpilles and the Luberon in the heart of Provence.

Each step of production is carried out by hand using only 100% vegetable oil bases.

No animal products are used and there is no animal testing...ever.

Strict adherence and respect for a tradition first recorded circa 1370 near Marseille, France, result in a product with a slightly imperfect visual finish.

We find this charming.
